Malachi Flynn Needs More Minutes

Malachi Flynn

A lot has been said about this guy since he was drafted with the Toronto Raptors this season. However, I think much of his talent hasn’t been showcased and I think it’s time that the Raps use him to their advantage.

A young player like Flynn is eager. They want to show off, they want to improve, or they just want to learn about the league. Only so much can be taught at practice and training. Applying those skills, especially since athletes always need that environment, will help bring someone like Malachi to the next level.

From where I see it, Flynn hasn’t been trusted much since the beginning of the season. I’m not sure if Nick Nurse has something against him, but it seems to me that Flynn has to argue for Nurse to hear him out.

Russel Westbrook and the Washington Wizards faced the Toronto Raptors on April 5

One instant I can recall was the recent game against the Wizards on April 5. A foul call was made on Flynn and you could see how much he had to really explain to Nurse saying that he didn’t do it, that it wasn’t his intentions, and that the call was all wrong. “Okay, okay I understand,” was the type of attitude I got from Nurse. The level of disappointment and even care that this guy had was not where I expected it to be.

Malachi Flynn was named Defensive Player of the Year and averaged about 17.6 points, 5.1 assists, and 4.5 rebounds per game in his college years. His height lying around the 6’1 mark, Flynn was founded by many of the colleges in the United States because of his athleticism and unique talent.

I may seem a bit far-fetched, but from all the tweets talking about how Malachi should be getting more minutes is confirming what I saw that game. In order for a player to really show their true potential and skills, they need to be invested into the real thing, not just practices. The pace of a real game is different. The atmosphere is at a different level, with or without the fans.

Because of Lowry and Vanvleet being out due to injuries, Flynn has been getting those minutes. We see him performing amazing assists and aggressive drives to the basket because he is using his time productively. People now are talking about him because of his amazing performance recently. Why? Because of his minutes.

Nick Nurse needs to trust Malachi more and not just go with his go-to Siakam, Lowry, and Vanvleet combo that everyone sees. Yes they’re great. But Malachi Flynn has a lot more in store than what you see is being offered.
